Welcome to the Sustainable Development Goals page
.
In June 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, more than 178 countries adopted the "Agenda 21 Partnership for Sustainable Development" to improve people's lives and protect the environment.
The United Nations Millennium Declaration was approved on September 8, 2000. Point 21 states: We must make every effort to safeguard all humanity, and especially our children and grandchildren, from the threat of life on a planet that has been irreparably destroyed by human activities and whose resources will no longer be sufficient to meet their needs.
The United Nations General Assembly launched an Open Working Group of 30 members in 2013 to develop a proposal for the SDGs. In January 2015, the negotiation process started for the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development after 2015, with the 17 SDGs as core themes..
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs are included in a UN-GA Resolution called the 2030 Agenda or what is colloquially known as Agenda 2030.

The 17 SDGs
- No Poverty
- Zero Hunger
- Good Health and Well-being
- Quality Education
- Gender Equality
- Clean Water and Sanitation
- Affordable and Clean Energy
- Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- Reduced Inequality
- Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Responsible Consumption and Production
- Climate Action
- Life Below Water
- Life On Land
- Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
- Partnerships for the Goals.
Though the goals are broad and interdependent, at July 6, 2017, the SDGs were made more "actionable" by a UN Resolution adopted by the General Assembly. The resolution identifies specific targets for each goal, along with indicators that are being used to measure progress toward each target. The year by which the target is meant to be achieved is usually between 2020 and 2030. For some of the targets, no end date is given.

The SDGs need to embrace the concept of social-ecological systems, seeing people and the biosphere as integrated parts of a whole rather than as separate systems. Research is showing that humans are a part of and shaping ecosystems from the local to the global scale, and at the same time we are fundamentally dependent on the functioning of these systems.
The SDG process needs to address and navigate the trade-offs between being ambitious and achievable. It also means that the SDGs need to be set in a way so that they are inspiring rather than deterring. And that they should address issues that can be tackled on different levels in society and government.
The third condition for developing effective SDGs is that formulating the goals should be guided by existing knowledge about social change processes on all scales, from global to individual.

17 Goals to Transform Our World |
---|
The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. |
