Everyone's (Business) Acumen

A contribution to everyone's strategic thinking (whether or not in economic business)

In my younger years, I was a sailor. A crucial factor in any sea voyage is the current. If you're sailing west at 4 knots, but the current is moving east at 5 knots, you're heading east against your will. Moreover, you have to be aware of the current changes in tides and geological conditions (for example, open sea versus a passage between islands). This image serves as a (physical) metaphor for the (cultural/legal) foundations of the world we live in.
We go where the world goes

The current global focus is on "sailing as best we can," so we drift just one knot in the wrong direction (mitigation). But (not every metaphor is 100% accurate), we, as humanity, can do something about the societal currents: "Prosperity without Growth" (title of a book by Tim Jackson).

We can start thinking about why and how our society functions as a complex adaptive system where politics, economics, citizen behaviour, and so on are interconnected rather than isolated. These elements form a dynamic whole, influenced by the interests, values, and goals of various societal actors, both large and small. The interplay of these factors guides the direction we take together.

In human existence, action precedes perception. Collaborative thinking and the creation of images and concepts are powerful and fundamental actions. Historically, conceptual thinking has always paved the way for practical implementation. (For instance, Democritus proposed the idea of the atom as early as 400 BC.)
