What are dilemmas?
Dilemmas arise when there are competing claims.

Thinking about the concept
A visual thesaurus search is always an excellent starting point to discuss a concept definition:

Moral dilemmas
Moral issues can be set out on a range: from issues, via problems to dilemmas.
Moral issue
A moral issue arises from a lack of appropriate knowledge (and skills). We can look for that knowledge. We may still need to process that knowledge to arrive at a precise answer, but that does not lead to a problem. The knowledge is easy to find, and, if necessary, experts are available to advise on this.
.
Moral problem
With a moral problem, the matter is more complicated. In addition to acquiring knowledge and skills, this also involves charting a well-considered course. In doing so, we want to avoid cliffs and avoid collisions. We need a solution in the form of a strategy. The shape you choose determines credibility. An outsider's view can help.
.
Moral dilemma
A moral dilemma is a separate issue. It is a choice between conflicting values. You have reasons to do A and B, but AB at the same time is not possible. The underlying values are mutually exclusive. Whether you choose A or B, you will always face negative consequences. A moral dilemma is a value conflict, and a value conflict cannot be resolved. You can only choose and let yourself be known by that choice. You have to show what you stand for.

Wicked problems
A wicked problem is a problem so complex and possibly unsolvable that it requires approaching the issue collaboratively using multiple lenses:
- The problem involves all kinds of parties with different values and priorities
- The problem has complex and interrelated causes
- The problem is difficult to understand, and it is constantly changing as solutions are created
- The challenge is literally unprecedented
- There are no indications for a solution to the problem
Wrestling with such multifaceted issues requires a transdisciplinary thinking skillset and a disposition/mindset.
